Meet our interns for 2023

We’re delighted to introduce you to our three interns for 2023 – Luyolo, Arniqe and Shanell. All three are former Lalela learners and have taken a gap year to gain valuable work experience at our Hout Bay HQ, where they’ll learn a host of valuable skills while also serving as teaching assistants in our workshops. Welcome onboard, team!
SHANELL, in her own words, is “artistic, adventurous, humble and outgoing”, and enjoys reading books and learning about new things. She thinks her best qualities are her loyalty, honesty and integrity. She’s come full circle at Lalela, having started in our Hout Bay programme at its inception.
My Lalela journey was—and still is—amazing! I’ve been with Lalela for 12 years and enjoy every bit of it. I’ve grown and experienced so much as a person.
Lalela has brought out my creativity. Bringing out your imagination feels good and the fact that Lalela allows you to do that is amazing.
I applied for the internship because I wanted the work experience and to learn new things about the programme and the people in it. I was always so fascinated by how the facilitators come up with such amazing curriculums for the students.
I’m looking forward to working with the kids and helping them to do better not just in the programme but themselves as well. I am also hoping to achieve more knowledge of art in general.
I want to become an au pair and work internationally. But first I want to continue doing my short-term courses and build up my portfolio.
My advice to young learners is free your imagination. Lalela is one of the good things in your life.
Above: “I’d love to give back to my community and build better resources and structures.”- Arniqe
ARNIQE describes herself as “vibrant, free and outspoken” and also as “caring and kind”. She sees every experience as “a blessing”, and loves nothing better than learning new skills and opening herself up to new opportunities. She’s also been a Lalela learner through most of her life.
My journey with Lalela began in primary school when I was in grade 3. It was my escape from going home early in the afternoon so every week when we had after school programmes I’d stay behind to just have fun with painting and drawing. I never knew I’d love art as much as I do now.
As an intern I’d like to share all the great experiences I had and everything I’ve learnt thus far – the moments and memories we have as a family and the blessings along the way, the opportunies Lalela brings to the table, and the exposure that you as a young artist can get through Lalela.
I hope to inspire young kids to stay at Lalela and learn new things and gain experience like i have. I’m here to learn more and then give back to my community.
My plan for next year is to study further. Beyond that, my greatest dream is to have an orphanage and help kids find families. I’d also love to give back to my community and build better resources and structures.
My goal is to change lives and give to the poor and just make the world a better place. I’m striving for change.
To young Lalela learners I say, stay ambitious, have fun, and be open to new ideas and opportunities for new experiences.
Above: “Anything is possible.!” – Luyolo
LUYOLO graduated from Lalela’s Masiphumelele programme last year, having joined in 2018. He describes himself as “nice, humble, bubbly, shy, curious, creative and passionate”.
What I loved most about Lalela was doing the art – it helps me feel calm and relaxed.
During my time at Lalela I learnt about responsibility, respect, honesty, discipline and creativity.
As an intern, I want to uplift youth and to encourage them to believe, achieve, and create. I want to learn how to connect and establish relationships with the children and I want to gain experience so that I can be able to teach young minds.
Next year I am going to university to pursue teaching (I need to apply now).
It is my wish that I can be financially stable by the age of 27. I hope I can be part of Lalela until then and onwards.
My advice to the young learners is that they should believe anything is possible.
