The Lalela Classroom

In Lalela’s programmes in South Africa and Zimbabwe, we provide innovative arts education in safe spaces for at-risk youth during the vulnerable after-school hours and holiday periods. Lalela uses the power of the arts to help students navigate a clear path that is often cluttered with the hazards of extreme poverty, including gang violence, HIV/AIDS, and physical and substance abuse. During the workshops, a meal is provided to all participants.

Holiday Programme

During school holidays, Lalela provides full-day arts workshops for at-risk youth. Meals are provided for all participants. The programme also includes international volunteers and renowned guest artists for cultural exchange and professional artist engagement opportunities.

Civic Engagement

Lalela celebrates community service year-round. However, for significant national and international holidays, we develop specific programmes for our students to give back through the power of art. These holidays include: Mandela Day, Women’s Day, Heritage Day, Youth Day and Human Rights Day.

Female Empowerment

Our Female Empowerment programme works with young women in South Africa as they enter high school. This is the age when many girls drop out of school because of family and community pressures. We work with these young women to not only encourage them to remain in school, but develop the confidence to excel in their academics and the courage to dream beyond what is expected of them.

Leadership Programme

Lalela’s leadership programme empowers emerging student leaders with the knowledge and the applied skills of leadership in order to become role models in their schools and communities. Lalela works with local partners, such as Learn to Lead, for additional support.

Community Art

Lalela students make a lasting impact by beautifying local businesses and landmarks.
