The Lalela team recently participated in the annual September Sessions, held in the scenic surroundings of Bertha Retreat. The September Sessions are a few days set aside in the Lalela team calendar for reflection and strategic planning for the year ahead. It’s a time where we gather to dream, brainstorm, and devise action plans, setting the stage for another productive year.
The September Sessions are a pivotal moment to fine-tune our strategies and continuously innovate, ensuring our initiatives remain relevant and impactful for the young people participating in our programmes.
In a rapidly evolving world, staying impactful necessitates adaptability and forward-thinking. The young people participating in our programmes are at the cusp of their potential, and our initiatives must resonate with their aspirations, challenges, and dreams. We aim to serve as a catalyst, inspiring within them a sense of self-confidence and leadership, among other aspects of self-development mastery.
Awakening the Entrepreneurial Spirit Through Educational Arts
Lalela is dedicated to providing educational arts to youth from under-resourced communities, with the aim of sparking creative thinking and awakening the entrepreneurial spirit. By doing so, we hope to foster systemic shifts that facilitates growth, innovation and productive opportunities for all young people to thrive. Lalela’s Executive Director Firdous Hendricks explains: “Creating art is a journey from idea to completion, demanding inner confidence, courage to make your mark, creativity in facing challenges, and the grit to push through mistakes. In our Lalela classrooms, young people learn these vital life skills, carrying them into every aspect of their lives.”

Looking Ahead
The September Sessions was also an opportunity decide on the main themes to be explored in our curriculum for the year ahead. The selected themes – brainstormed collectively by Lalela staff – showcases a holistic approach to personal and community development.
In “The Art of I AM”, individuals explore self-worth, collaboration, personal initiative, and embark on self-discovery journeys. The theme “We Connect” focuses on community building, unity, personal growth, and ensuring justice as well as expression. “I Act” encourages social responsibility, visibility and storytelling and harnessing imagination in leadership. Finally, “We Shine” celebrates individual achievements, promotes global awareness, gaining authority and control over personal choices and stresses self-affirmation.
The days spent in reflection and planning at the September Sessions have infused us with renewed energy and sense of purpose. We are eager to implement our refined strategies and innovative ideas in the coming year, striving to facilitate a meaningful difference in the lives of young people through the transformative power of educational arts.

As we immersed ourselves in the inspiring September Sessions, we were reminded of the power of creativity and the importance of staying true to our mission. Together, as the Lalea team, we look forward to paving the way for a brighter, more creative future for the young people we serve.
