Lalela facilitators engaged in an interactive art workshop led by artist Penny Siopis, exploring innovative techniques under her guidance.
Our Lalela facilitators recently had the opportunity to participate in an interactive art workshop led by the acclaimed artist Penny Siopis at the A4 Arts Foundation in Cape Town.
It was an enriching experience for Lalela facilitators, and it also provided them with valuable tools and techniques that they can pass on to the young learners in our after-school programmes.
Siopis guided our facilitators through the process of creating artworks using wood glue and different colours of ink. This unique method sparked excited conversation about the unpredictability of the glue in the artmaking process.
The workshop allowed our facilitators to expand their horizons and develop fresh approaches to their work.

Siopis’s wisdom resonated deeply with our facilitators as she emphasized the importance of embracing an open and exploratory process in art. “There’s no wrong or right,” she advised. “If it’s open to you, then it’s open to us. This is an open process—art is alive and not only a commodity.” These words serve as a guiding principle for our facilitators as they work with young people from low-resourced settings who may not have had much exposure to creating art before.
Siopis has made a name for herself not only in South Africa but also internationally. The artist explores various mediums including painting, installations, and film, skilfully blending different influences and materials to push the boundaries of conventional art. With the inspiration and knowledge gained from the workshop, Lalela facilitators are now equipped to bring a fresh perspective to their own workshops they facilitate for learners in Lalela’s after-school programmes.
We are grateful for the opportunity our facilitators had to learn from such a renowned artist. The impact of this experience will undoubtedly ripple through our Lalela programmes, enriching the lives of the young people we serve and enabling them to harness the transformative power of art.
