Celebrating Women’s Day with Lalela

This Women’s Day (August 9), Lalela hosted an inspiring and fun-filled afternoon at Bertha House, where women from various professions joined the girls in our Female Empowerment Programme. The event was a celebration of creativity, connection, and the power of shared experiences. Together, these women and girls explored their talents, discussed the unique challenges of being female, and shared their dreams—all while crafting and having fun.

It was a jam-packed and impactful event, and one particular activity saw the women and girls sharing compliments with each other—a reminder that empowerment isn’t just about grand gestures; it can be as simple as offering a compliment or kind word to another woman or girl.

The atmosphere of the event was filled the energy that comes from women supporting and motivating each other. The conversations highlighted the importance of creating spaces where women and girls can connect even if it is for a few hours.

She Fest at Constitution Hill: Empowerment in Action

In addition to our Women’s Day celebration, Lalela learners in Jo’burg participated in the She Fest event at Constitutional Hill from August 7th and 8th. The focus of this two-day event was on mental health, self-defence, and the arts—crucial areas that impact the lives of young women today.

Umbono Films showcased impactful films produced and written by women, addressing critical issues like mental health, suicide, and cultural practices such as lobola. Female professionals in the music industry shared their experiences, discussing the challenges of working in a male-dominated industry and the challenges that women can be exposed to and thus provided key insights for learners to be aware of. Learners also participated in a self-defence course, equipping themselves with techniques vital for personal safety.

Workshops covered topics such as self-validation, social media usage, self-love, positive internal dialogue, and discipline. Organisations like Masakhane were present to offer resources on mental health through their SWITCH Campaign, ensuring that learners had access to the support they need.

As we continue to celebrate Women’s Month, let’s carry forward the spirit of empowerment, creativity, and connection that defined our Women’s Day event and She Fest. Whether it’s through art, conversation, or simply being there for one another, we can all contribute to a world where women and girls are uplifted and equipped to achieve their dreams.
