Lalela’s arts education programme has touched the lives of thousands of youths since 2010, where our story begins.

From a gathering of 20 students in the township of Imizamo Yethu, Western Cape, South Africa, during the Soccer World Cup, our programme has expanded its reach over the past decade to communities across Cape Town as well as in Johannesburg, and beyond our borders to Zimbabwe.

ZIMBABWE

Our partnership with Zara’s Centre allows us to bring our educational arts programme to children in Bulawayo.

WESTERN CAPE

In Cape Town, we work in the communities of Imizamo Yethu, Hangberg, Masiphumelele and Bonteheuwel. Through our partnership with Zeitz MOCAA, the largest museum of African contemporary art in the world, we provide educational arts workshops for children from the inner city of Cape Town. In partnership with the Bertha Foundation, Lalela programmes are provided to children from the communities of Pniel and Languedoc near Boschendal in the Cape Winelands, and to children from the informal settlement of Siyangena at our newest programme at Philippi Village.

Home of our Centre of Arts and Innovation, our arts education programme in Johannesburg plays a big part in the movement to transform the inner-city with our Maboneng Precinct and Tomorrow Trust partners.

“Lalela has helped to solve many issues we were experiencing with our learners, who are often directly affected by the social ills our community struggles with. A lot of positive things have happened, from improvements in behavior and academic work, to the learners developing more self-respect and confidence.”

Principal,
Hout Bay High, Hangberg

“Lalela is one of the best projects ever for our school and for Masiphumelele because of the many challenges we face in our community, from poverty, drugs and alcoholism to low self-esteem and hopelessness. All these social ills impact negatively on the education of our learners. Having Lalela at our school is a blessing because the mindset of our learners has changed.”

Principal,
Ukhanyo Primary, Masiphumelele

“Lalela has benefitted our children a lot in terms of the artistic skills they have developed, but we have also realised that the arts education they receive through the programme works as a form of counselling as well. We are so grateful for this service to our community.”

Principal,
Fort Usher Educational Institute, Johannesburg

“The programme helps our learners who are faced with challenging social issues, poor living conditions, violence and lack of sustenance, to have a sense of belonging.”

Teacher, Silikamva High, Imizamo Yethu
