This Youth Day, Lalela’s young leaders stepped into their power by leading an inspiring event that celebrated youth voices.
Youth leaders from Lalela’s Leadership Programme hosted an unforgettable Youth Day celebration for grade 4 and 5 learners from Sentinel and Oranjekloof primary schools at Nowers High School in Hout Bay. The day began with an educational programme that honoured the legacy of the 1976 student uprising in South Africa. Ropafadzo, one of the youth leaders, opened the event with an original poem that reflected on the meaning of Youth Day. Fellow leaders, Neyasha and Oyena followed up with a talk that reminded everyone of the sacrifices made by young people in the past, and Yolanda delivered a saxophone performance that brought the audience to an appreciative silence.

The educational youth day programme also included a poster competition. Children in attendance created artworks that captured what Youth Day means to them today.
The tone then shifted from reflective to fun as the rest of the day’s programme included classic games like the three-legged race and egg-and-spoon race. There were prizes, lots of laughter and the young leaders kept everyone entertained. They did it all themselves, that is, the planning, organising – basically running the event from beginning to end. It was a clear demonstration of the confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills nurtured through Lalela’s Youth Leadership Programme.
The Leadership Programme equips young people with the tools to lead through action. With support in mentorship and creative expression these changemakers are learning to speak up, collaborate, and make a positive impact in their schools and communities.
Meanwhile, over at Philippi Village, the Lalela team celebrated a different kind of collaborative achievement, by supporting the local library in an unexpected win. In preparation for the recent South African Library Week (SALW) 2025 which ran under the theme, “Libraries for Sustainable Communities,” the library located at Philippi Village reached out to Lalela for help with a display competition.
Lalela facilitators contributed handcrafted arts and crafts made by learners in the programme, including upcycled pieces. The library’s display stood out and they won!
This moment of shared pride highlights the power of creativity and the impact that the educational arts can have beyond the classroom.
