Each year, Lalela’s Community Exhibitions stand out as one of the most anticipated moments across all our programme sites. The exhibitions are an opportunity to reflect and celebrate a full year of  creativity with the youth participants in our after-school educational arts programmes.

In 2025, our theme of generosity wove its way into every curriculum; from reflective journaling and listening exercises to exploring personal boundaries. Throughout the year, learners explored what generosity means in their own lives including generosity of spirit, and generosity in how we share space, ideas, and care for one another. The artworks showcased at the exhibitions are the outcomes of a full year of the programme and various curricula.

A Year of Learning

The Community Exhibitions serve as a bridge between Lalela’s classrooms and the broader communities we serve. Parents, guardians, teachers, and local community members are invited to experience firsthand what their children have been creating and what they have been learning.

With facilitators and Lalela management present at the exhibitions, visitors receive a deeper understanding of the skills embedded in Lalela’s educational arts model, which includes among other things, nurturing creativity, confidence, self-awareness, leadership, collaboration, and the ability to express complex feelings and ideas through art.

For many families, these exhibitions offer an introduction to the value of the educational arts and how creativity strengthens problem-solving, emotional literacy, and communication skills.

Children Taking the Lead

One of the most powerful moments at every exhibition is watching learners stand proudly beside their artwork, explaining the story behind it in their own words. They speak about the processes they followed in making the artwork and the lesson they learned.

These conversations, between learners and their families, are at the heart of Lalela’s work. They encourage connection while showing parents the powerful role creativity plays in their children’s development.

The Community Exhibitions do more than display artwork because the events also anchor Lalela’s educational arts programmes more firmly within each community. By opening our doors and sharing the year’s journey, we attract  support from families, schools, and local partners.

A Celebration of Effort and Commitment

Alongside the exhibitions, we recognise learners for their consistent participation throughout the year. Each child receives a certificate of completion, acknowledging their commitment, and regular attendance. This moment of celebration reminds learners that their hard work matters and that they are valued.

We look forward to inspiring even more moments like these in the year ahead.
