Lalela’s mission to provide educational arts to youth in under-resourced communities is brought to life through partnerships like the one with Disa Primary School. Together, we are not just teaching art; we are building futures and creating a community of empowered individuals ready to change the world.

A Strong Partnership

Lalela enjoys a long-standing partnership with Disa Primary School in Bonteheuwel. At Disa Primary, our educational arts programme is offered both as a subject and as an after-school programme, allowing children to explore their creativity in a safe and supportive environment. Despite the social challenges in Bonteheuwel, we celebrate the unity expressed by residents and the way the community invests in what Lalela offers. The Lalela programme belongs to the whole community, and Bonteheuwel programme facilitator Marilyn November is a testament to the work Lalela does.

Disa school principal Mrs. Afrika Karelse took the time to reach out to us and express her support for Marilyn’s efforts and Lalela’s impact on the children participating in the programme. Here is what she wrote to us:

“I would like to attest to the caliber of facilitator we have in Ms. Marilyn November. I have been working with Ms. November since 2020, when I started at Disa Primary. I have rarely seen a person so dedicated to the arts and its ability to liberate our children from the mundane and humdrum of life in a severely disadvantaged community. She has worked tirelessly to provide for the needs of our children and the society.

As a school, we depend on her to be our ear on the ground. We channel donations to the community through her because she has a finger on the pulse of Bonteheuwel. I am immensely proud of the work our learners accomplish through her support and development. Ms. November is a passionate artist, but she is also a consummate professional. She is more than a facilitator; she is a way into the hearts of our people.

Please know that we, as a school and community, value Ms. November and her input because she always goes above and beyond her scope of practice by seeing the child and dealing with them as holistic beings. Ms. November truly personifies ‘Lalela’ (to listen). She knows the children’s stories, and she is aware of our societal needs. She works tirelessly every day to help our children grow and develop through artistic expression. We are grateful to have her services at our school and look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Lalela through her facilitation.”
