Five minutes with…Pamela Ndlovu

Above: A smart, creative and curious student, Pamela’s also currently on the university sailing team!

Pamela Ndlovu (20) is an alumnus from Lalela’s Centre of Arts & Innovation, where our programme reaches students from Johannesburg’s inner city.

Pamela’s bright and curious nature made her stand out from the moment she joined, says Programme Manager Vika Mjoka. “She was always excited by concepts and descriptions of how things worked. She also naturally fell in with a highly creative coalition of students who produced some of our centre’s best works.” However, struggling with her school grades, her mother curtailed Pamela’s Lalela attendance so she could focus on academics instead. “But she secretly continued to come to our workshops whenever she got the chance,” Vika notes. “Her mother’s fears were never proven, and instead Pamela did even better than expected at school!”

Now enrolled in her second year at Wits University, she tells us more about herself and what she’s up to…

Being at Lalela gave me the feeling of being part of community during my school years.

What I loved most about Lalela was the freedom to create, play and ask questions. I am naturally very curious and the facilitators allowed me to ask these questions.

I liked Lalela because we were able to express ourselves through art without judgement.

One of the most important things I learned at Lalela was that everyone is talented in their own unique way. The life lesson that came out of my time there is to do what you love and what makes you happy.

I am currently a Bachelor of Science student at Wits University in Johannesburg.

My future plans are to expand my knowledge through science, so I see myself going all the way to doctorate level in my studies and becoming a scientist of note and an academic par excellence.

At Wits I like that I am part of the sailing team and I am learning a new sport and have been accepted by everyone there and they are teaching me everything with love.

My dream is to travel around the world and see its natural side of it.

A message I would give to a young learner is to continue seeking education because there are little opportunities granted to us which we always don’t appreciate. These opportunities build up into this one huge opportunity so education does provide part of that. Another message to the younger learner is to try new exciting things that would grow a person.
