Azarias Raphael Manhique, 19, is an alumnus with an inspiring journey from Lalela learner to successful businessman.
Azarias Raphael Manhique, also just known as Raphael, joined the Lalela Maboneng programme in Jo’burg in 2017. After completing the programme in 2020, his future was uncertain. He wanted to study further, once he graduated from high school, but lacked the financial means to do so and decided to return to Lalela in 2021 as a volunteer.
He could not have known then, that this decision would lead him down a successful path of entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurship Journey
During his time as a Lalela volunteer, Azarias became involved in a sewing project despite, as he describes it, having no prior interest in sewing or fashion.
When the project came to an end, Azarias saw an opportunity to transform his newfound skills into a business venture and the rest as they say, is history!
His business creates one-of-a-kind tote bags and reusable shopping bags, drawing inspiration from the Japanese philosophy of WABI, which emphasizes simplicity and harmony with nature. The business, named WABI, also produces outdoor gear such as bags used when cycling or running.
Azarias has not forgotten the catalyst for his successful business.
He shared, “Attending the Lalela programme was an invaluable experience that set me on the path to my current career in fashion design and modelling. At Lalela, I honed my artistic skills, learned about creativity, and gained confidence in expressing myself. The opportunities to experience all kinds of art not only broadened my artistic horizons but also instilled in me a deep passion for creativity.

“This early exposure to the arts sparked my interest in fashion and design, inspiring me to pursue it as a career. The supportive environment and guidance provided by the programme was incredibly helpful in shaping my artistic journey and ultimately led me to where I am today.”
Mentorship
Azarias’s dedication to his craft caught the attention of a photographer and fellow entrepreneur, Lubabalo Mxalisa, who became his mentor. With Lubabalo’s guidance, Azarias not only refined his business skills but also ventured into the world of modelling, showcasing his own brand as well as others.
Today, WABI has evolved from a small side hustle into a thriving business that fully supports Azarias. Through his journey, he has demonstrated resilience, creativity, and commitment to learning and growth.
We couldn’t be prouder of Azarias’s accomplishments and his story is an example of Lalela’s commitment to providing educational arts for young people in low-resourced settings, inspiring their creativity and nurturing their entrepreneurial spirit.
