Lalela was proud to be part of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair once again, where a curated selection of artworks created by young people from our Hout Bay programme was on display.

Among the featured artists were Joyce Nyamana, Nyasha Dzamara, Dealmax Nyatsapfu and Leticia Zidana, whose works drew significant interest from visitors throughout the fair. Their pieces emerged from their engagement with Lalela’s Selfless Stories curriculum, which this year is framed by the theme of generosity. Through this curriculum, learners explore how giving and receiving can be expressed towards themselves and others, and how these experiences shape their worldviews

A key feature of Lalela’s stand was an interactive artwork that invited visitors to write their own reflections on generosity. These individual contributions came together to form a mosaic, symbolising community and connection.

The stand also showcased Lalela scarf products, each featuring original artwork by Lalela learners. Every scarf includes a hangtag that shares the story of the young artist behind the design. Importantly, 100% of profits from scarf sales are reinvested into Lalela’s educational arts programmes.

Lalela learners also experienced the art fair through a unique tour tailored for them. Youth from Lalela’s Western Cape programmes — including Hout Bay, Masiphumelele, Bertha Retreat, Bonteheuwel and Philippi Village — as well as learners from the Zeitz MOCAA programme, took part in the Kids 4 Kids Tours guided by Lalela interns and alumni. These peer-led tours created space for young people to explore the fair, engage with contemporary artworks, and see their peers’ creative journeys reflected within a major international art context.

In addition, decorative Boschendal wine bottles designed by Lalela learners and alumni were auctioned at the fair. Each bottle was transformed into a unique artwork using a variety of designs, colours and mediums. The proceeds from the auctioned bottles go directly back into Lalela’s educational arts programmes.

Lalela’s presence at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair reflects the organisation’s ongoing commitment to creating platforms where youth creativity is visible and valued. By connecting young people in our educational arts programmes with professional art spaces and audiences, Lalela continues to nurture confidence, self-expression and a sense of belonging in environments that many youth in our programmes would not ordinarily have access to.
