Shakespeare Schools Festival 2025: Lalela Learners Shine On Stage

This year’s Shakespeare Schools Festival has officially wrapped up— and what an enjoyable performance it was! After months of rehearsals, Lalela high school learners from Hout Bay High, Silikamva High, and Nowers High stepped into the spotlight at The Star Theatre in Cape Town’s Homecoming Centre and brought A Midsummer Night’s Dream to life on stage with so much heart.

Stage Debut

For many of the participating learners, this marked their first time performing on a professional stage — a milestone moment that built confidence and stage presence. The theatre was filled with proud parents, friends, and supporters who cheered them on.

This annual festival is a highlight on Lalela’s calendar. It offers learners an unforgettable opportunity to experience the magic of live theatre and to express themselves in a new way.

Creative Direction

A special thank you goes to the director Claire Baker, who volunteered her time and creative leadership over four months to guide this production to success. Reflecting on the experience, Claire shared:

“This was our 11th contribution to the festival, but it felt like one of the freshest and most impactful interpretations of the Bard’s work to date. The cast and crew were intelligent, creative, and deeply engaged with the text. We witnessed the emergence of new talent and some truly nuanced performances. Siyanda Mafusini’s portrayal of Bottom was one of the best we’ve seen. The four lovers brought such depth that I found myself holding my breath in awe. The energy, the laughter, the initiative — it was unforgettable.”

Claire also noted that while the cast stuck closely to the original script, they infused it with a modern African interpretation.

Reflections from the Stage: Shakespeare Festival Through Learners Eyes

Being part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival was more than just a performance opportunity—it was a journey of growth, learning, and connection for many of our young actors.

“Being part of this production was a transformative experience. It challenged me as an actor and taught me the value of vulnerability and collaboration. I learned that true artistry lies in the connections we make with one another—on and off stage. This project left an indelible mark on my life, reminding me of the power of storytelling to inspire, heal, and unite us. I am forever grateful for the lessons and the friendships forged during this journey.”

Stage Manager  Christopher ushé explained more: “I wasn’t the star, I wasn’t loud. I was just there—watching, listening, learning. But being part of Shakespeare’s world, even as a stage manager, felt like stepping into a land of royalty, magic, fairies, lovers, and fools. And from all of it, I took something real. I learned that you don’t need a big title to lead, and you don’t need to be out front to make an impact. I picked up skills I didn’t even know I was learning—how to talk to people, work with others, and bring ideas to life. That’s going to help me as I move forward in my career as an AI specialist. And it’s not just for me—it’s something I can pass down, something for the next generation too. Quiet work, big lessons.

“Being part of this production has been nothing short of magical. I’ve grown not just as an actor, but as a person. It taught me the power of collaboration, vulnerability, and how to write stories that matter. I’ll carry these memories and friend ships with me for the rest of my life. I can gladly say to the world that – I WAS PART OF THE SHAKESPEAR PROGRAM!!!”

Nyasha Dzamara

“Over three unforgettable months, I took part in a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Claire, a kind-hearted woman who treated us like her own children. Her nurturing guidance brought Shakespeare’s world to life. Ryan, our facilitator, was the glue that held us together, fostering a sense of family among the cast. The experience was both enriching and transformative, filled with laughter, growth, and lasting bonds that made it truly magical.”

“The Shakespeare Schools Festival was an unforgettable experience that ignited my passion for the performing arts. I gained invaluable skills, confidence, and memories that will stay with me forever. I’m thankful for the chance to bring Shakespeare’s words to life — and I look forward to many more performances in the future.”
— Davis Kaumutini

“Being part of Shakespeare was an incredible moment of my life Shakespeare gave me confidence, friends and most importantly a family and it exposed me to different worlds and personalities and it showed me that I can be what I wanna be in the acting world. Thank you Lalela and Claire for your dignity and love I will also carry the experience and brag about it to the world and say I was once a member of Shakespeare in 2025.” — Siyanda Mafusini

“Being part of the Shakespeare Festival gave me so much confidence. It opened the door to learning new things and brought Shakespeare’s world to life in such a vibrant way. Most importantly, I want to thank Claire for always being there for us—for building our confidence and for showing us so much love.”
