Applause for Matric Class of 2024

February 28, 2025

Success doesn’t happen overnight—it is built through dedication and the support of a strong community. At Lalela, we witness this journey firsthand in the lives of the young people we work with, from those taking their first creative steps in our programme to them going on to make their mark on the world.

One such inspiring story is that of Nathan Robertson, who started his journey with Lalela in Grade 4 and went on to become Hout Bay High’s Matric Top Achiever for the Class of 2024. Nathan’s story is one of hard work and sacrifice to create a better future for himself.

Reflecting on his achievement, Nathan shares: “It feels amazing—I’m proud of myself for what I’ve accomplished. I started working hard in Grade 10, spending hours studying at the library. My environment motivated me. I come from an underprivileged community, and I want to create a future where I can support myself without struggling. My motivation came from seeing what was happening around me.”

Nathan’s success didn’t come easy. Like many of his peers, he had to make tough choices to stay on track.

“There were times I gave up time with friends to study. But it was easier because all my friends in Grade 12 had the same goal—and they all passed too.”

Nathan credits Lalela for playing a crucial role in his personal and academic growth. His involvement in Lalela’s Leadership Programme helped shape his mindset and approach to success.

“I joined the leadership programme. That programme changed my perspective—we worked on vision boards, and I could picture where I wanted to see myself in the future.”

Through this process, Nathan developed communication skills, and self-motivation.

“I used to be socially awkward and afraid to speak in front of others. Being in the programme helped me overcome that because I had to do orals and presentations.”

Nathan’s journey reflects the commitment and resilience that we see in so many young people in our educational arts programme. His story shows that when young people are given the right tools and encouragement, they can achieve greatness.

This same spirit was celebrated recently at Silikamva High’s Wall of Commitment, where learners leave their handprints and signature as a symbol of their dedication to their academic journey at the start of their matric year.

Above: Iminathi James is one of the  top achiever’s at Silikamva High, Lalela learners at Hout Bay High all passed Matric, Nathan Robertson is the top achiever at Hout Bay High and the Matric class of 2025 at Silikamva high commit to focus on their academic success.

The Wall of Commitment: A Shared Promise

At Silikamva High, the Wall of Commitment is more than just a tradition—it’s a powerful symbol of dedication and perseverance towards academic excellence which in many cases leads to productive and future. Each year, learners pledge to attend extra weekend classes and work towards their final-year goals, marking their commitment with a handprint on the wall.

This year, the tradition took on an even deeper meaning, as parents joined the ceremony for the first time. Standing alongside their children, they reinforced the message that success is a shared journey. Their presence added an extra layer of encouragement, reminding learners that they are not alone in their pursuit of achievement.

At Lalela, we are honoured to contribute to this tradition by facilitating the artwork that brings the Wall of Commitment to life. As a long-standing partner of Silikamva, we are also proud to be present at the ceremony and support the matric learners in our programme.

To all the learners of Silikamva High, may your handprints on the Wall of Commitment serve as a lasting reminder of your dreams, resilience, and the community—Lalela included—that stands behind you. We also extend our best wish
