Learners from Lalela’s Maboneng Programme in Johannesburg took part in the We the People Constitutional Education Programme—a powerful initiative marking 25 years of South Africa’s Constitution by making it more relatable and accessible to young people.

Hosted at the iconic Constitutional Court, the 12-week Saturday programme welcomed 50 learners each week from across the city, including Lalela participants. Sessions offered a rare chance to engage directly with Constitutional Court Justices, including the Chief Justice himself.

These interactive sessions went beyond information-sharing—helping learners connect with the Constitution as a living, relevant document that shapes their rights, responsibilities, and futures.

A standout moment was a heartfelt discussion with Justice Steven Majiedt, who asked learners about the real challenges they face—including lack of legal documentation and barriers to basic services. Moved by their stories, he committed to supporting their communities.

Civic Leadership Inspires Leadership

Justice Majiedt followed up with a visit to one of Lalela’s partner schools and the Maboneng art centre. There, he joined learners in a creative session and witnessed how art is used to process and express lived experiences.

Deeply impacted by what he saw, Justice Majiedt pledged support for initiatives such as a school feeding scheme, and offered to help with practical needs like printers and furniture—showing the potential of dialogue to spark action.

This collaboration between Lalela and We the People proves that when civic education is paired with creative expression, young people are empowered not just to learn but also to lead. They gain the tools to participate and help shape the society they deserve.
