Lalela made quite a splash at this year’s Investec Cape Town Art Fair with youth in our Western Cape after school programmes participating in exclusive tours of the Art Fair and our stand attracting considerable attention and interest.

The Investec Cape Town Art Fair brings the international art world together in Africa. It features over 100 leading galleries and more than 500 artists from four continents and attracts thousands of art purveyors and art enthusiasts over the duration of the weekend event held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Lalela youth participated in the Kids 4 Kids Art Fair tours which are selected routes that loop throughout the event space, allowing the young people to take in the art on display. The Art Fair tours are led by Lalela alumni and over 150 Lalela youth from our Western Cape programmes took part in them.

One of the Kids 4 Kids Art Fair tour guide’s, Percy Marehwa explained what it was like: “The experience was really good because it showed us the other side of art. Because by exploring and engaging with different artworks it showed us that art is not just art since it can also allow us to explore different cultures like Mam Esther Mahlangu.”

Lalela Executive Director Firdous Hendricks explained the significance of Lalela youth attending the Investec Cape Town Art Fair:

“The Kids 4 Kids tours provide our youth with an incredible opportunity to access an inspiring and creative space. Viewing art is a powerful experience that broadens their horizons to new ideas and ways of thinking. It’s a particularly special moment when our learners see their artwork exhibited in such an esteemed  space alongside some of South Africa’s greatest artists.”

 The Lalela stand

Lalela once again had a stand at the Art Fair where selected learners work was exhibited and sold along with the exquisite Lalela Scarf. Profits from the sale of the Lalela Scarf directly benefit our organisation, enabling us to continue running our after school educational arts programmes.

The stand also had an activation which asked visitors the question: “How does art impact your life?”

Visitors wrote down their responses on sticky notes and also had fun taking selfies on polaroid cameras. Our stand was a hive of activity and many of the learners’ exhibited works were sold on the spot. The stand also served as a means of amplifying the benefits of educational arts and Lalela staff were on hand to explain to curious visitors about the impact of our after-school programmes which run in the Western Cape, Maboneng in Jo’burg and Zimbabwe.

Thank you to all who dropped by the Lalela stand to say hi!
