Making our mark at Philippi Village
May 15, 2021
Since launching our after-school educational arts programme at Philippi Village in September last year, we’ve loved seeing our thriving group of students get involved in creative projects both in and out of Lalela workshops.
Overjoyed that we were able to initiate the programme after months of delays due to the pandemic and lockdown, we got off to a vibrant start with a mural depicting Lalela’s values – a fun way to get our first learners in the programme actively engaged with what Lalela is all about as well as an invitation to other prospective students to join our after-school programme.
Most recently, our young artists helped to create the striking Tree of Life installation in the reception area and also brightened up benches in and around Philippi Village.
Launching a voluntary after-school arts education programme in Philippi Village had multiple objectives, not least of all the provision of a safe space for children residing in the surrounding informal settlement in the hours when they are most vulnerable. Our programme also seeks to encourage whole-brain thinking in young learners while exposing them to the joyful process of art making. And judging from the fun interactions during these recent activities, we’ve already seen just how empowering the introduction of our art programme has been.
