“During my eight-week internship at Lalela, I had the privilege of contributing to various impactful projects, each offering unique opportunities for personal and professional growth.
These included some stand out moments such as:
- Art Sessions & Holiday Program Support: I assisted with art sessions during Lalela’s Holiday Program for students in grades 1-5, preparing sandwiches for the learners and supporting facilitation, setup, and cleanup.
- Mandela Day Mural Project: I led the design and facilitation of a Mandela Day mural over the course of three weeks. I managed the planning, collaborated with high school students and peers to create a cohesive design, and sketched prototypes in both traditional and digital formats. Drawing inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s legacy, the mural featured butterfly wings symbolizing change, the South African flag, Mandela’s iconic gold flowers, and an interactive element where participants could “wear” the wings. This project not only highlighted Mandela’s message of change but also served as an educational and inspirational tool for young children.
- Facilitation at Sentinel Primary: I co-facilitated and led creative sessions with students, applying a curriculum designed to foster a safe and inclusive space for growth and creativity. My approach encouraged students to explore big ideas, build on their personal experiences, and engage in meaningful discussions rooted in Lalela’s core values: listening, kindness, sharing, caring, creating, respect, love, and fun.
- National Women’s Day Event: I contributed to Lalela’s Women’s Day event by designing 20 unique characters for different groups, creating name tags and table décor, and brainstorming creative, budget-friendly female empowerment activities, such as compliment chains and keychains.

“From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank the Lalela community for this incredible experience. I truly feel like I’ve found a second family here in Hout Bay. From jamming out to music at half-past 10 for Lalela Burgers every morning to engaging in icebreakers and practical prep and creating a whole mural for Mandela Day, I am beyond thankful for the eight weeks we shared. Thank you all for believing in me and providing me with opportunities to be unapologetically creative. I told myself this summer that I needed to indulge in more art, and Lalela was the best environment for this goal. This experience reminded me how much I enjoy the art of creation, collaboration, education, and working with kids— and how prioritizing these passions helps me soar to new heights. Words cannot express my appreciation and love for you. I miss everyone so much! I will treasure this South African winter for the rest of my life.
I wanted to share a quote from one of my journal entries: “Art truly is powerful and I’m so incredibly proud to be a part of an organization that makes it accessible to the communities here. The love I see and experience here is the purest form of love I’ve ever shared and received.” Thank you all, I have so much love in my heart for you.”
