When Siyolisi Bani first stepped into a Lalela classroom as a Grade 11 learner at Masiphumelele High School in 2011, he couldn’t have known how profoundly the programme would shape the course of his life. What began as an after-school activity quickly became a pathway to his purpose.

“Lalela offered me so much more than just an ordinary after-school activity. It was a platform where I could learn, express myself through various forms of art, and develop the essential skill of networking, he reflects.

In the nurturing community of the after school programme, Siyolisi found space to express himself and to see life through a broader and brighter lens. “Lalela broadened my horizons, giving me a new perspective on life and helping me see the world through a different lens.”

Siyolisi believes that the way Lalela facilitated leadership enabled him to build his confidence, make valuable decisions, and see himself as someone who could influence change in his community. “The leadership programme, in particular, had a profound impact on my life, teaching me how to carry myself with confidence, be a positive influence in my community, and make informed decisions about my life. I learned valuable skills that enabled me to navigate the challenges of life and take charge of my own destiny.”

From learner to Lalela’s first intern

In 2013, Siyolisi became Lalela’s very first intern. It was during this period that he met Loyiso Skoti, the mentor who would become one of the most defining figures in his life. Through Loyiso’s guidance, Siyolisi began to reconsider his dreams of building a career in the corporate creative sector. He found himself thinking about his responsibility, providing mentorship, and what it means to uplift others.

“I asked myself: if I don’t inspire the youth in my community, then who will?’ he recalls. “Who will create opportunities for the next generation if we all choose different paths?’

“These questions weighed heavily on my mind, and I started to feel a sense of responsibility to give back to my community. I realized that the opportunities I had received through Lalela were not just for my own benefit, but also for the benefit of those around me.”

This thinking came into sharp focus in 2015, when unrest in Masiphumelele threatened the future of Lalela’s programme in the area. Faced with the possibility of losing the very space that had changed his life, Siyolisi stepped forward.

“I was determined to keep Lalela alive, not just for my own sake, but for the sake of the young people in my community who deserved the same opportunities that I had received.”

While completing his studies in Graphic Design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, he took responsibility for running the programme which ensured that young people in his community could continue to access the creative outlet that had shaped his own journey.

Balancing university and facilitating the programme was challenging, yet Siyolisi remained committed. He graduated with a qualification in Graphic Design in 2016, and later completed studies in Photography and Videography at the Orms School of Photography.

A full-circle journey of giving back

“Throughout my journey, everyone at Lalela played a pivotal role in shaping the person I am today. They allowed me to grow, mentored me, and guided me in the right direction. I will forever be grateful for the opportunities I received through Lalela and for the community that supported me every step of the way.”

Siyolisi’s story is one of returning home to give others what was once given to him, a full-circle moment of offering the youth enrolled in the programme a chance to dream boldly and create new futures for themselves.

Siyolisi’s message to young people

To the young people walking a similar path, Siyolisi offers this message:
“We are capable of achieving great things, no matter our circumstances. We should never allow our situation to determine our future. There is a community for each of us, and for me, that community is Lalela, a place where you can grow, be guided, and find the support you need. Make the most of every opportunity, and use your journey to uplift others.”

Siyolisi’s story continues to inspire the learners he now teaches at Bertha Retreat.
