Lalela Inspires Creative Minds: A Glimpse into the Mary Evans Exhibition

At Lalela, we believe in the transformative power of art and the potential it holds for young people living in under-resourced communities. Recently, learners from our various after-school programmes in the Western Cape enjoyed the opportunity to witness the extraordinary exhibition by acclaimed artist Mary Evans at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA).

At Lalela we provide educational arts to young people in communities where resources are limited. Our goal is to ignite creativity and the entrepreneurial spirit, opening doors to possibilities that may seem distant in their everyday lives. As part of this commitment, Lalela, through strategic partnerships (with the Zeitz MOCAA among others), organises excursions for our learners to engage with the arts through exhibitions and related events.

The Mary Evans Exhibition

A highlight during this last term of the school calendar, was an excursion to the solo exhibition, GILT, by Mary Evans—an accomplished British artist of Nigerian origin. Hosted at the prestigious Zeitz MOCAA, this exhibition was a rare opportunity for our learners to experience.

The title, GILT, plays on the word’s ‘gilt’ and ‘guilt,’ delving into the multifaceted layers of the Black experience. While ‘gilt’ conveys the appearance of gold on a surface, ‘guilt’ explores the complex emotions stemming from historical wounds such as slavery, colonialism, Apartheid, and late-stage capitalism.

Evans’ Artistic Narrative

A central theme in Evans’ extensive artistic practice is the life-sized silhouette. Using materials like paper and disposables, Evans weaves a visual story that reflects the historical and contemporary mistreatment of the Black body.

As a part of the exhibition, Evans introduced new works commissioned by Zeitz MOCAA. These pieces, shaped by her research and exploration of Cape Town and South Africa, added a layer of local resonance to the global narrative she weaves through her art.

For many of the young people we work with, opportunities to experience such exhibitions are rare. These excursions go beyond being a cultural outing; they become windows into a world of possibilities, inspiring our learners to dream big and believe in the transformative power of their own creativity, innovation and imagination.

As we reflect on the excursion to view the Mary Evans exhibition, we’re reminded of the immense potential within each learner we work with. We continue to provide educational arts to learners to express themselves and this way hope to foster a generation of artists, critical thinkers, and change-makers.
