Equipping the young women in Lalela’s programmes to imagine and map out a better future for themselves has never felt more critical. And so, for National Women’s Day in South Africa, we were honoured to host a group of inspiring female figures to work with our girls as role models and mentors in a Heart Map workshop.

What better way to motivate our Female Empowerment group than by teaming them up with successful women with whom they could connect and find encouragement?

Heart Maps are designed to connect two people on a meaningful heart-to-heart artful journey. It’s a powerful process of listening and then reflecting back one’s understanding of the other, using creativity as the medium to unlock the depths of one’s heart: hopes, passions, dreams, and the obstacles that might stand in the way to achieving them.

Through the process, our girls learned to elevate their voices and to recognise the importance of having their ideas, stories and opinions heard. Girls who believe in themselves and their own potential are more likely to achieve at school and grow into empowered women.

Lalela launched our Female Empowerment programme in 2015 to offer a safe, empowering space for girls at our partner schools in Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg in Hout Bay. It’s become one of our most popular initiatives, attracting a growing number of high school-aged girls every year. Our aim is to encourage these bright female learners to remain in school, develop the confidence to excel in their academic studies, and build the courage to dream beyond what is expected of them.

It’s never felt more critical to stand behind our girls. The most recent data from Stats SA paints a grim picture: last year one in five women (21%) in South Africa experienced physical violence by a partner. Among adolescent girls, there was an increase of 48.7% in births among children from 10 to 14. The problems resulting from teen pregnancies go beyond health concerns; many girls will drop out of school, with a far-reaching impact on their educational and employment opportunities.

It is our goal to roll out Lalela’s Female Empowerment programme across all the communities we work in, and in 2023 we’ll be launching in Masiphumelele.
