Jessica’s star is on the rise

Above: Jessica takes charge in her classes – we think she’s going to go far!
We’re so proud to introduce one of our bright little learners, Jessica, who has just completed Grade 3 at Oranjekloof Primary School in the township of Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay, Cape Town.
Jessica might only be nine years old, but we can tell this little star has a shining future ahead of her. We know this for sure – and not only because she was awarded a whole five academic certificates at her school prize giving earlier this month Take a bow, Jessica!
Jessica’s mom recently sent our facilitator Tandi Makobeni the most encouraging message, which makes us feel certain this young artist is blooming in other important ways in addition to her academics.
“Lalela’s afternoon classes have made a huge difference in my child’s life. She is no longer shy, she can socialize, and she is doing well with academics. I am grateful to your programme,” she told us in her letter.
“Jessica joined Lalela classes at the beginning of 2019 because she travels by bus to her home in Khayelitsha – a township situated in the Cape Flats, which is far away from her Hout Bay school. Because Jessica had to wait for her mother to finish work, she started coming to our after-school classes,” explains Tandi.
“When Covid-19 came and we were forced to do virtual classes, Jessica was very active and always excited to create from home. When we came back to our normal, full-sized classes at the beginning of this year, after a long absence, Jessica had grown so much and showed so much joy to be back in a physical class. She is confident, creative and presents more leadership skills. She strongly feels comfortable leading and carrying the group in our classes.
“We are very proud that Jessica received five academic certificates at the end of this year – learners prioritising school and excelling academically is one of our core outcomes in Lalela’s Theory of Change,” adds Tandi.
“We cannot wait so see what Jessica achieves as a Lalela artist in the future!”
