Lalela’s annual September Sessions are done and dusted after few days of intense planning, strategy alignment, and reimagining our curriculum for our after-school programme. We are ready to head into the new year with fresh ideas and renewed energy. These sessions are a key moment on the Lalela calendar, where our teams from Cape Town, Maboneng (Johannesburg), and a staff member from Zimbabwe’s Zara Centre, come together to chart the way forward for 2025.
For a few productive days, we dedicated ourselves to setting the stage for another year of impactful work, ensuring that we remain connected to the needs of the young people in our programmes.
Through team activities and brainstorming sessions, we worked on curriculum, among other things, to deepen our impact in the communities we serve.

But it wasn’t all work! We also celebrated our colleague Marilyn, whose dedication to the Bonteheuwel after-school programme earned her recognition from our board. Her efforts are the first to be honoured in what will become an annual tradition of celebrating the outstanding contributions of a team member.
This year’s sessions were held at Lalela partner, the Bertha Retreat, where the peaceful surroundings allowed for both hard work and reflection.
It was an inspiring few days, reminding us of the transformative power of arts education.
