Above: A memorable moment from The Tempest.

Lalela learners wowed the audience with their performance of The Tempest at the Baxter Theatre Centre during the Shakespeare Schools Festival South Africa this month.

After months of rehearsals, preparation, and teamwork, the Lalea high school cast took to the stage with confidence, bringing Shakespeare’s The Tempest to life in a memorable performance. Lalela learners demonstrated not only their talent, but also the dedication and commitment that has shaped the production over the past few months.

Proud parents, teachers, friends, and supporters came out to celebrate the production and and atmosphere in the theatre reflected the excitement and pride shared by everyone who has been part of the journey leading up to the performance.

The production has a profound effect on learners who participate. This is what they had to say after they performed:

Melissa: “I feel so amazing I feel great. We did our best! When you have a passion for something you can really pull it off.”

Thabang: “I’m feeling excited because I did what I thought I could not do, what I have practiced for many months and this was my first time on stage. I feel great because I got support from my friends, the audience, family even Lalela.

Dexter: “I gained more confidence and I’m at a level where I can speak in front of a crowd. The experience was fantastic and fun. I also learned teamwork.

Mary: “When I went on stage was nervous I was scared  but I told myself, you know what? This is my day, this is my time to shine. I’m proud of myself.”

The evening was also deeply meaningful for Lalela as the performance was dedicated to Oliver, who recently passed away. Papa Ol, as he was affectionately known to the team, played a pivotal role in supporting Lalela’s participation in the Shakespeare Schools Festival over the years. His encouragement, generosity, and belief in the learners will always be appreciated by the Lalela community.

A heartfelt thank you goes to director Claire, whose guidance and encouragement continue to create opportunities for learners to shine on stage. Thank you as well to Aphendule for leading the production and supporting the cast throughout this journey, and to every Lalela staff member who contributed behind the scenes to make the production possible.

We are incredibly proud of every learner who took to the stage and shared their creativity, courage, and hard work with the audience.
