It was a truly special afternoon at Lalela’s New York Benefit, hosted this year at SECOND, whose beautiful setting brought a wonderful sense of occasion to the gathering. Friends, partners, Board members, and supporters who make up our active Lalela community came together to celebrate the organisation’s work providing educational arts for young people from low-resourced communities.

Chef Laurent Tourondel served guests a mouthwatering menu, which was paired with a celebratory programme featuring music, performances, and a heartfelt presentation about Lalela’s impact.

That impact was powerfully reflected through the personal story of Lalela alumnus and now facilitator Ryan, who shared a video message about the transformative role Lalela has played in his life. Additionally, Lalela’s Senior Programme Manager, Nwabisa who travelled from Cape Town, shared reflections on the programmes and the young people the organisation serves.

Throughout the afternoon, guests also had the opportunity to shop Lalela Scarf products, each featuring original artwork created by a Lalela learner. Every purchase supports the programmes and helps carry learners’ creativity into the world.

Guests enjoyed South African musical performances by Morris Goldberg and OJOY, joined by vocalist Yolanda Sangweni. The afternoon also featured a striking stilt walker wearing a costume created by Alexandra Wynne Designs  which showcased the Lalela Scarf.

Harry Santa-Olalla once again brought extraordinary humour and heart to the live auction.

To everyone who joined us, contributed, donated auction items, raised a paddle, shopped the Lalela Scarf, and continues to believe in the potential of young people: thank you. Your support makes it possible for Lalela to keep its programmes accessible to youth.

With thanks  to Alexandra Wynne Designs, Beneville Studios, Camp Canoe, Dorp Hotel, Leonard Street Provisions, Thornybush, Chef Francis Janisch and Timeless Africa Safaris. And thanks to DJ Coleman for the great music at the concluding dance party!
