For Antonet Mazombwe joining Lalela’s Female Empowerment Programme marked the beginning of a journey of self-discovery and confidence.

Growing up in Imizamo Yethu, Cape Town, she says her community has played an important role in shaping who she is.

“Imizamo Yethu is a community that helped me unlock a lot of things that I never knew about. It also taught me a lot of things.”

Through the Female Empowerment Programme, Antonet found a safe space where she could grow, build meaningful relationships and discover new ways to express herself.

One of the most important lessons she has taken from the programme is the value of teamwork.

“It is easy to get the job done when you’re working as a team.”

The arts also became an important outlet for expressing herself.

“I also learned how to express my feelings while using art.”

Antonet says the programme helped her become more confident and comfortable expressing her thoughts and feelings.

For her, the Female Empowerment Programme is about much more than creative activities.

“What I enjoy most about Lalela is the workshops here in Hout Bay where we do painting, and being around the facilitators. They know how to make you feel safe when you are joining any programme that has to do with Lalela.”

Antonet’s growth is something Lalela facilitator Carol has witnessed firsthand.

“Antonet joined the Female Empowerment Programme as a quiet, reserved young woman who rarely spoke. Over time, I watched her become more confident, participate more openly and find the courage to express herself in different ways. Watching her perform in our Shakespeare production was an unforgettable moment. She stepped onto the stage with such confidence and presence that I had goosebumps. Her journey is a powerful reminder of what can happen when young people are given a safe, supportive space to discover their voice and believe in themselves. I am incredibly proud of the young woman she is today and the remarkable person she is continuing to become.”

Looking ahead, Antonet has big dreams for her future. After graduating from high school, she hopes to become a cardiologist.

Her story reflects the purpose of Lalela’s Female Empowerment Programme; creating spaces where young women are encouraged to build confidence, develop leadership, express themselves creatively and believe in their own potential.
