Lalela is proud to celebrate the achievement of our alumnus Luyolo Gayeka (21), who has been accepted at Rhodes University to pursue a degree in art. Luyolo’s journey exemplifies the impact of Lalela’s work, which provides educational arts for youth in under-resourced areas, sparking creativity and fostering an entrepreneurial spirit.

“I initially started with Lalela back in 2014, but I already learnt about it in 2010. I was 10 years old when I joined at the time. I was doing Grade four at Ukhanyo primary school in Masiphumelele. What kept me coming back to Lalela was the fact that I had no food at home. So, I found that place as a comfort zone. I knew at the end of the Lalela session, I should get a slice of bread and then eat to satisfy my hunger. Also, what kept me coming back was my love for art, especially painting because that’s where I find happiness and peace. When I got to high school, I continued with the programme because I wanted to become a skilful artist. The Lalela classroom environment has been my comfort zone throughout these years because I got to be myself. I also became more comfortable socialising more with my peers and engage with new people who joined the programme. In the Lalela environment, it was easy for me to generate ideas and be able to grow.

When I became a Lalela intern, I was scared, confused, but happy. The reason I was scared was because of the changes in my life and the new work environment that I was introduced to. But I was happy because I could gain an income for myself and secure essential things like food and toiletries.

I feel blessed and happy to be accepted at Rhodes University, since I’m the first one in the family to be attending university. My goals at the university are to simply learn and gain skills, including life skills because I need to learn how to be independent. My family was so excited and happy for me attend university.”

“The Lalela team taught me many skills, including public speaking, which is a life skill for me. Teamwork was also a skill I acquired at Lalela. In addition, I learned how to brainstorm ideas and develop a vision with objectives.

The message that I have for young people is that they should never compromise their future or anything that concerns their future. They must have that one person who always believes in them. Because that one person can be influential in changing their life for the better. I had one and I can proudly say it was Lalela’s Nwabisa Ndongeni and I’m really thankful.”

The Lalela Team cannot be prouder of Luyolo’s achievement, and we wish him all the very best!
