Mthokozisi Joshua Ramokgadi from Johannesburg joined Lalela’s Maboneng Programme when he was in Grade 5. Through Lalela’s after-school programme, he developed his creativity and confidence.

“Lalela helped me open up and truly explore who I am,” Mthokozisi explained.

Inspired by his experiences, Mthokozisi noticed that many people in his community and across South Africa didn’t have access to proper shoe care. To address this, he started a shoe-cleaning service. His idea was not only aimed at cleaning shoes but also at encouraging people to take pride in their personal belongings—a symbolic act of self-care.

He explains, “With a clean sneaker comes a clean personality.”

Looking ahead, Mthokozisi is determined to elevate the clean sneaker culture in his community, cultivating an appreciation for personal care and responsibility.

Mthokozisi’s journey highlights the impact of creativity, resilience, and community engagement—key values fostered at Lalela. Many young people like Mthokozisi have come through our programmes, discovering who they are while finding innovative ways to uplift their communities and create a brighter future.

We are proud to support and celebrate young entrepreneurs like him who are making a difference.
