Lalela’s star is shining bright following recognition for our work in providing educational arts for young people in under-resourced communities. Our latest award is testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire Lalela team, the support of the communities we work in and the young people who participate in our arts programme.

Lalela has been distinguished with the title of Best Arts and Culture Programme at the prestigious 21st Cultural Affairs Awards, presented by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. The Western Cape Cultural Affairs Awards are hosted annually and is a celebration of the rich cultural, linguistic, and heritage excellence in our province. To be recognised on such a platform is an acknowledgment of Lalela’s significant contribution to our diverse cultural landscape through the arts.

Dedicated to fostering creativity and imagination so that young people can thrive, Lalela facilitates a canvas for young minds from under-resourced communities in the Western Cape, Johannesburg, and Zimbabwe to express themselves through art and to nurture self-development mastery. Through educational arts, Lalela aims to ignite creative thinking and awaken the entrepreneurial spirit within young people, so that they can participate in a productive future.

A Nod to Excellence – Tandi Makhabeni’s Nomination

Adding another feather to Lalela’s cap, Tandi Makhabeni, our senior facilitator at the organisation, received a well-deserved nomination for Best Arts and Culture Coach. This nomination stands as a testament to Tandi’s unwavering dedication and passion for cultivating creativity and fostering personal development among the youth. In addition, Tandi’s nomination reflects the passion of the entire Lalela team for playing their roles effectively, which helps carry forward the Lalela vision.

Words from the Executive Director

Reflecting on this honour, Lalela’s Executive Director, Firdous Hendricks, expressed her immense pride and gratitude: “I am so incredibly proud of our team for everything we achieved over the last 12 years. We are true trailblazers of change! A massive THANK YOU to all our supporters and to the Lalela team!”

The award reaffirms the transformative power of art influencing  young minds to embrace and grow their potential. Here’s to Lalela, continuing to inspire the spirit of creativity and entrepreneurship in the hearts of the youth!
